MEN + MONSTERS – A Very NSFW Review [18+]

You know how exciting it is to find something new. Something shiny and different. Different in that good and happy way. You might not do it often, find those rare pearls and when you do, you feel your heart skip a beat and suddenly a tiny butterfly starts to stir in your stomach. I can hear you; what on earth are you going on about this time, Lina? Well, I’m gonna tell you.

I am an avid reader of manga. Not any old manga, but boys love manga. Not really news to anyone who has followed my blog more than three days or so (since my last post actually). It was Japanese manga in the beginning, everything I could get my hands on, but soon I started to throw glances at Korean manhwa too. A lot more interesting I though at the time, now equally as interesting. And that was about it. That was the boys love world I stayed in. Not a bad world of course, the boys are hot and does to me what they have always done. The thought never once occurred that maybe I should go west, look at what’s on my home turf. Well, someone else tapped my shoulder and opened my eyes, and suddenly I had a tiny butterfly annoying me.

I have written about how boys love isn’t, and shouldn’t be, a good representation of LGBTQ+. It just isn’t and there is very little to be done about it. I as a member of the community doesn’t even want the genre to be. I don’t need boys love to be realistic. What I do want is something that is happy and colorful. Something positive. Something that doesn’t involve a negative look on sex between people. Consensual sex between grown ups. And diversity. Because diversity is important and there is not much diversity in boys love.

So, someone sent me an email and said “Hey, look at this!” And I looked. And then I looked some more. I actually looked a whole lot for a few hours until there was nothing more to look at. I found it; the happy, the diverse, the positive.

If you could look a little bit more happy that I found you, you guys.

MEN + MONSTERS by Aero Zero

Yes, it is in capital letters, as it should be. Not only because the creator writes it that way but because it actually deserves to be written like that. If I could I would climb up on the roof top and shout it out. Anyone who likes different smut between male persons should read this.

MEN + MONSTERS follow the story of a monster hunting, perverse human, his robot and a very human like monster, contrary to the feral ones the human hunts. The man and the monster have a romantic and very intense and hot relationship to say the least. I am used to read extremely explicit manga but some scenes in this comic made even me blush. Which is a good thing. Well, they end up in a lot of conflicts during their adventures, meet monsters and robots, and sex happens.

I must admit that in the beginning I was a bit skeptical. Already on page five you are confronted with the first inclination of a sex scene. Nothing too heavy but still, where is this going was my initial thought. Uphill, is my answer now. I was afraid it would turn into one of those PWP stories; you know Porn Without Plot. I was proven wrong. Yes, there is a lot of steamy sex scenes, uncensored to boot which is very refreshing. No pixelated penises anywhere.

Sex aside, the characters all have their own intriguing personalities. Lex is a buff, hairy dude who collects sex toys. He doesn’t discriminate but sees an opportunity for sex in pretty much all and any he meets. He works as a captain in the Royal Guard, hunting and killing feral monsters. When he finds an injured Silas, the monster in this saga, he rescues him instead of kills him, much to the annoyance of his companion robot Akilas. Akilas is, as mentioned, a robot who is made only for the purpose of helping Lex in his monster hunting duties. Well, and some more. Not to give the story away completely they end up, as I wrote above, in trouble constantly and some shenanigans occur. They meet new people; monsters, humans and robots. They enjoy themselves and entertain each other and others.

I usually don’t read monster manga or comics. I have read only a few bara manga and I can’t say that they have stuck with me that hard. It just hasn’t been my thing. The closest to robot sex I have ever come is fan art of Big Hero 6. Don’t ask. So, I am utterly surprised that I couldn’t stop reading once I had started. I couldn’t put it down until I came to the end and then I just wanted it to go on. I wanted more. I have been pondering about what it is that makes this comic so special. Because it is special. There is something more to it than the usual boys love manga. None of the bara manga I have read has what this comic has.

Maybe it is the color scheme? The reds and yellows and oranges; they set the tone for an erotic and amorous mood quite well. You feel all warm and fuzzy when you read those hot parts of the story. The warm parts are mixed with some colder, bluer parts which is a nice contrast. Overall is it a very bright and colorful comic. Colors make me happy. And there is something else; happiness. Everybody is happy. No one is forced into a relationship against their will. You all know what I think about relationships that start with force. So, I am happy that this comic is completely about consensual relationships. The love and sex is built around mutual trust. They are open with each other and there is no shame or jealousy, only pure, steamy love making. Sometimes one on one, other times perhaps with some more. Everything is okey. I might be a strange bird but I wouldn’t mind a world this colorful and bright. Not when everyone is happy with it.

Speaking of the sex, because I just need to mention this; if you have a certain fetish you can be almost certain to find it in this comic. It is filled with a lovely arraign of different kinds of fetishes. I love it, it caters to everyone. I even discovered some fetishes I never knew I actually found arousing so yeah, there you have it.

I wish there were more comics like this one out there. If you are curious about it you can read it for free on the creators homepage. As of now, when I write this, there is four full chapters and 13 pages of chapter five. There is also the option to buy volume one on the homepage and they also have a Patreon if you want to support them.

I urge you to read it, especially if you like monsters and buff dudes, but even if you just like something out of the ordinary or something different from the usual. Something that is gay and happy, and openminded. Also, sexy.  Just go and read it, it is well worth the time.

  1. I adore the MEN + MONSTERS comic series and the artist is such an awesome down to earth creator as well (I’ve happily had the chance to talk to him a few times when I was reviewing the comic for Pride Month on my blog) So happy to see other bloggers sharing this awesome series! If you want recommendations for yaoi from the west I would recommend looking into the yaoi works from Dany&Dany

    1. Oh yes, they are indeed very talented. I love M+M a lot. Haven’t had the chance to check out the other stuff yet but gonna do that. Have you reviewed the other comics they have done as well? I haven’t had a chances to go through all the blogs I missed this summer when I was on hiatus but I am working my way slowly through them all.

Dany&Dany yes, I have read some of their work. I like, I like. It’s nice to find something new and refreshing apart from the same old BL I usually read. But I get the feeling that there isn’t to much gay comics in the west which is a bummer.

    1. Hehe, yeah the fetishes. 😎 Green slime man living in a jar. Let your imagination overflow. 😘

Yeah, PWP can be fun for like 500 words or so in a pointless fan fiction but not in a comic with multiple chapters. It is really good. A cosy little story.

  2. The few boys love manga I’ve read didn’t impress me. They typically suffer from boring characters, or there’s not being much to the story other than two dudes hooking up. I like the art work. It’s nice to look at even if it’s lewd. Nice to know the story side is also pretty good. If I ever get fed with boys love manga I’ll give this a shot.

    1. I agree, a lot of BL is following the same pattern and it can get kind of boring. This comic is anything but boring so yes, do give it a go, it is well worth it if not for anything then for the artwork.
