So, This Is What Makes An Otaku?

I have long been wondering what the rules are for defining an otaku. I have finally found my answer.

20 anime. That’s the magic number. If you can’t name 20 anime you are not an otaku. Finally I know. Although, knowing them by name and actually have seen them, isn’t there a difference? Isn’t one more otaku if one have seen 19 rather than knows only the names of 20? Wow, now I suddenly got back to square one again. ๐Ÿ˜ซ

Since I wanted to do a list I might as well prove that I am an otaku and list 20 anime. Just to be really sure I am right I have seen them all. Because, we don’t need any confusion do we. (this post is all in the name of me doing a list and nothing else ๐Ÿ˜Ž )

  1. Beelzebub
  2. Yuri!!! on Ice
  3. Garzey’s Wing
  4. High School Life of a Fudanshi
  5. Dive
  6. 07GHOST
  7. Attack on Titan
  8. Love Stage!
  9. Sex Pistols
  10. Inazuma Eleven
  11. Diamond no Ace
  12. Shokugeki no Soma
  13. Days
  14. All Out
  15. Neon Genesis Evangelion
  16. Towards the Terra
  17. Pupa
  18. Free!
  19. Evil or live
  20. Another

Well, I could go on. Hell, I can make a list of 20 boys love anime only to prove my rottenness too. (there’s only 2 in this list) But, that’s for another day. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  1. I think whatever the next step AFTER otaku is worth quantifying too. Maybe that’d be like name 20 anime that you’re currently watching, I think that’d be me! Though I guess some people might finish an anime before starting a new one but still be super otaku, I personally like to have heaps on the go at once!

    1. A overlord otaku, thatโ€™s the next step. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿค— I am soon there. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I have started loads and that is extremely unlike me. I usually donโ€™t watch season anime because I want to binge it and finish before I start something new but right now I have a lot going on. My problem is I get confused by it. So, I am a pseudo overlord otaku because I watch the amount but I mix them all together when naming them. ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜‚

  2. Well if you only need to list 20 Anime shows then I think I’m probably an advanced Otaku since I’ve watched 178 Animes so far and Anime-planet says that I’ve invested 2 Months, 2 Weeks, 3 Days, 6 Hours and 58 minutes of my life into only watching Anime lolol ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. I’d say super advanced pro otaku I. ๐Ÿค— I have no idea in months and hours but I bet mal can tell if I can figure out where to look. If I dare. I mean, do I really want to know what a nut case I am? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ™ˆ

      1. To be honest I love how Anime Planet says that sort of things, you even receive like popups when you do a milestone ahah Don’t know why it makes me proud… Maybe it shouldn’t though ahah

  3. Hmm….I looked through this list and the ones I didn’t know or recognised I replaced with other that I do know: and I reached 20 as well. Yes! I can call myself an Otaku now as well. That is so cool. Although I now have to take care: I’m getting too many subtitles. I’m already an evil mastermind, villain, Octopus..and now Otaku…it gets way too confusing lol ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
But good for you: of course I pretty much could have guessed you were an Otaku! That is I would have been surprised if you were not ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Haha, I am a shut in neet, who spends all day in front of the computer or reads a manga. Only thing I don’t have is merch. That’s because it’s so expensive and I rather invest my money in manga. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

      1. Hahaha: Well trust me if I would not have a job, I would be the same ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š I love spending time at home (no really?? Duhhh…never would have guessed that (*shut up you sarcastic sounding inner voice you*).
No merchandise huh? Okay…that’s going to change. Tell you what…if I am going to Dutch comic con next month (I probably am…but it depends on whether or not my fathe may or may not need an operation and ends up in the hospital). But if am…and I see something cool: I will buy it for you and sent it (or let Asta deliver it๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚). And I’m not taking no for an answer๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

      2. Gosh, I know it’s no point in me telling you no but I am still gonna say no. No, no, no, you cannot do that. It is too nice of you. Well, end of the protests. I know you didn’t hear one word of it anyway and since you are a grown man and do as you please I will leave it at that. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I’m sorry to hear about your dad. Is it planned or something sudden? I mean, is it some illness/injury he’s had since before?

      3. I thought I just heard someone say no? Did you hear that as well? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค” Well, I always hear voices in my head anyway, so I guess that is wasn’t anything too important ๐Ÿ˜‚
yeah…I am a grown man lol. But still…I promise if I see something cool, you will get it from me (and I also will leave it at that….๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ˜Ž)
hmm..well we don’t really know yet. He is going to get a scan on the 5th of March and the results of that will be revealed on the 8th of March. Depending on the outcome, he may or may not need to get an operation. It’s a bit difficult to explain, as I am not very good with medical terms in English, but let’s just say there is something in his back that puts extra pressure on his legs and that in turn causes him to have a very annoying pain. It is something he has had an operation for in the past, but we don’t know yet if this is going to be the same thing or something different..so yeah..tense times I guess.
Thanks for your concern though..that is very sweet of you ๐Ÿ˜Šโค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š

      4. Thank you so much. Yeah I hope so too. It can’t be going too fast for me now. I hope it won’t be too serious and he doesn’t need an operation. Last time he got one, it didn’t go all that well, so that’s a bit of a constant fear that we (my mother and I ) still have ๐Ÿ˜ข)

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Oh, itโ€™s not good. I know too well that fear. My dad had had three brain surgeries since -96, the latest one only a couple of years ago. Every time was horrible experiences for us all but especially the last two one even though they went well because the first one he ended up in a coma for a week. The other two nothing of that happened. So I hope that if your dad do have an operation it will go well too and nothing bad will happen. โค๏ธ

      6. Thank you so much for your kindness: really appreciate it so much ๐Ÿ˜Šโค
Wow: that sounds really rough though. I can definitely understand how that has been a horrible experience for all of you. I’m really glad to hear he pulled through though: hopefully he won’t need any more surgeries in the future. Whatever surgery it is, it’s always something that increases tension levels. Seriously hate hospitals: ughh ๐Ÿ˜ข

      7. He still has part of the tumor left but yeah hopefully it wonโ€™t grow fast. Itโ€™s benign fortunately. He has a cat scan tomorrow so fingers crossed. Heโ€™s almost too old now for such a big operation. And yeah itโ€™s traumatic and yeah, I hate hospitals with all my heart.

  4. I can certainly exceed 20 even without counting the anime series I have reviewed on Iridium Eye. There are times where I jokingly call myself an otaku hipster because I tend to pay attention to more obscure anime series and there have been times where I know about a certain creator or series before it gets popular like how I saw the original Hunter X Hunter, the original Kino’s Journey, or how I’ve followed Makoto Shinkai’s works over a decade before he came out with Your Name.

    1. My problem in naming pretty much anything is that I have a horrible memory… ๐Ÿ™ˆ I know a lot of anime, obscure once too, but names? No idea. Especially not if it is in Japanese. So if I got a question like that thrown at me I would be able to answer with all bl I’ve seen since they mostly have English names and I’ve seen them tons of times. But regular anime would be harder.

      1. True, and those names I just stumble on and have to hang up on the characters (which I have a mouthful to remember the names on too. I don’t get why I have such trouble with it. I mean, normal names shouldn’t be a problem. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ) or something else like for example if there are penguins in it (I watch an anime now with penguins in it “‘something’ Penguindrum” it’s called. Well, half the name is right at least in this case.) Okey, now I only ramble…

      2. Thatโ€™s it! Thank you. Itโ€™s an awesome anime and it annoys me that I canโ€™t remember the name properly. It feels kind of nonchalant but I canโ€™t help it. ๐Ÿ˜”

  5. I don’t think this is something that actually needs to be quantified given it is sure just to lead one person to say to another, “Oh, you can only name twenty, I can name 200”. I think if you feel comfortable with the label, go for it. If you don’t, then don’t. Not really up to other people to decide if you are Otaku enough for them or not.

    1. That is very true. ๐Ÿ˜Š This was mostly me finding a stupid meme to make fun of and also, I’ve been whining a bit about doing a list and how hard I find it and now I suddenly had the perfect opportunity to make a completely random one. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    1. Iโ€™m not sure ๐Ÿค” A very literary otaku perhaps. ๐Ÿค— Hehe, itโ€™s so stupid this definition of an otaku. Iโ€™m all for making lists I. Otaku or not, letโ€™s be excellent at it. (300-400 that is a massive amount of manga. I bow down at you. Thatโ€™s some goals. )

  6. Oh my! The big question. Are you an otaku. I suppose it depends on how much time you spend on it/obsess over it, in my opinion. If you work or are busy it becomes how much you want to spend on it. While we are at it, this can be a monetary spend too, depending on the individual and their money needs.

    1. Thereโ€™s so many ifs and whats and hows and stuff. Be an otaku and be excellent at if you feel like an otaku. Why should we really count it in dollars and names and numbers? Boring. I just wanted to make a list. ๐Ÿ˜ซ

      1. 0.o Gotcha… You made a list! Yay!

I do tend to be one of those fans that likes to categorize myself based off numbers and names, in regards to many fandoms. I’ll never tell anyone that they aren’t a true fan of something, but I am kind of mean sometimes when it comes to showing my superior knowledge in certain subjects with people who claim to be fans (trekkies, marvel and dc fans, various other things) of things I am passionate about. Especially star trek. I’m a very proud trekkie. Just me! *shrugs*

      2. I can be the same in certain fandoms. ๐Ÿ˜ณ Not anime/manga related but there was this actor and this comedy duo. Itโ€™s because I canโ€™t really stand when people have the wrong information. But I try to say it the nice way, not being mean or anything. I just think that maybe people could look things up before they open their mouths. Like, sometimes one google search is enough. (Now Iโ€™m talking about some old fans here when I say lazy stupid bitches who draw their own conclusions and decided whatโ€™s right and not about things. ๐Ÿ˜’. I canโ€™t help but firmly point out to them that they are wrong. Newbies I take it easy on though.)

Right now though I live my life in peace and have left it behind for a while and donโ€™t bother. Too much of a hassle. But I know what you mean.

  7. I don’t think the term Otaku needs to be only anime either. For me, Otaku is just another name for nerd or geek but for Japanese culture. So you can be an otome otaku or a cosplay otaku, it all depends on your level of passion for something.

    1. I know right. I find memes like these silly. Or more like; people who actually say things like it. Me, I made the post for the sake of the list. ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ˜Ž I like lists, Iโ€™ve been moaning about wanting to do a list but how hard it is to do a proper list and I seized the opportunity to make a totally random list.

  8. One piece, Bleach and Naruto!! Good thinking on that… and to ask for 20! It made me start counting myself! But I’m more of a manga fan… after all, I constantly motivate myself by setting a goal with the ultimate prize of laying back and reading manga for the rest of the night! Gosh, there are so many amazing manga and anime apart from those three too though!
