I am generally skeptical about anime based on games, especially when they are rpg/shoot em’ up games. Then add the ever so amazing era of the 90s to the mix and what do we have? Well, in this case we have Panzer Dragoon.
The anime starts off somewhere up in the air with the army casually shooting at a dark tower. It is not really clear what the timeframe of this is, or why, but there are some creatures that are suspiciously similar to dragons inside that they want dead. The tower fights back and blows the whole fleet up and what all thought was just possibly in fairytales are suddenly real; dragons are awakening.
Quick jump to Kyle, his lady Alita (who is a blind girl with extraordinary senses for everything else but vision) and his buddy Gibbedot (what is up with that name? At least I think that is his name, I can’t confirm anywhere, but I think that’s what Kyle calls him.) Anyway, the trio is out hunting some scorpion like creature when a huge, black dragon comes and kills Gibbedot, and kidnaps Alita. Enter; blue dragon Blau. Together, Blau and Kyle flies off in the pursue to find the Black Dragon and stop him from his mission to wake up the evil dragons who hibernate in the depths of the big tower.
SPOILER ALERT (you can scroll down a bit for my thoughts on this little piece I didn’t find as crappy as MAL did with their 3.21 score)
On their way they meet the imperial fleet and Blau sees black (no pun intended, also, he actually sees black, the dragon I mean) and shoots furiously at the ships and kills all but the captain. Their attempts to save Alita fails and instead they fly to the ground to see if someone human has survived. Kyle finds the captain and in a state of anger Kyle leaves Blau and huddles up in a cave with the captain. After a few hours the captain wakes up and whispers some words of how they musn’t let the black dragon reach the tower and then he goes berserk on Kyle and tries to kill him. He is possessed by, who knows what. Blau saves Kyle and off they go.
Jump forward; Black meets blue in the tower. Kyle manages to save Alita from the black dragon. She is stuck, her hands and feet tied inside the dragons body, but Kyle pulls her out. Some disorder occur and then they fly off, leaving Alita alone. Up in the air Blau tells Kyle that they need to combine their energy and just like that they defeat the black dragon. But, he was sneaky because before he left he put out some trigger device to free all the evil dragons. So the couple rush back to save Alita and blow up all the dragons. Blau makes the ultimate sacrifice and sends the loving couple off in a force bubble while he himself wanders down to the basement and blows himself and the army of dragons up.
Kyle and Alita wakes up at a tropical Island. Suddenly, for no reason at all really, Alita can see.
SPOILER ALERT OVER
So, I said at the beginning that I don’t actually think that this is utter crap. I don’t. What I do realise when I see this is that this is a game. It is based on a game and you can really imagine where all the cut scenes in the game are and where the shoot outs are and rpg parts are. It’s very easy to follow really. All the music is typical video game music from the 90s. And maybe that’s why I like it. Because I have played games like this. I haven’t played this particular game. If I had I might not have liked it since it probably steer away from the games (thus why I rarely like anime/movies made from games. At least the older ones, it might be better nowadays) but I have played other games in this genre from this era.
The music is absolutely top notch. I love it. I love that kind of music. It’s so nostalgic I get goosebumps when I hear it. I am a 90s kids when it comes to video games and music (and a lot of other things. Hell, I still wear plaid shirts and Doc Martens.) So yeah, the music is all there for me.
And, my shallow side gets hers too; Kyle is such a piece of sugar to suck on. The perfect specimen of a character. Even the voice is totally tolerable. Yup, I watched the dub. It’s completely fine.
Conclusion; This wasn’t such a crappy anime after all. (Still gonna end up on my crappy page though. Just for the sake of it starting out as one.)
