Yeah, I am not only watching crappy anime, I am also watching half naked teenagers diving down from high towers. Dear lawd, their booties and bodies. It is in no way possible for a 14 year old to look like those dudes. Who cares though, they are yummy to look at.
I know a lot of people have a lot of things to say about this little sports anime (I am talking about Dive!! here). Most of their opinions are lukewarm to say the least. It doesn’t really seem that anyone liked it. Many are comparing it with Free! which I think is completely stupid for a number of reasons. The number one reason might be that in Free! they actually compete as a team, in Dive they don’t. They are all rivals. No one in Free! is anyone’s rival within the group of friends. That teeny tiny little detail is actually a big part of Dive!! How they deal with the balance between friendship and rivalry. How do you support your club mate while you still have to compete against them? In Free! the mc:s never have to deal with that, it’s just fluffy friendship all around.
In Dive!! they deal with the fact that a lot of athletes constantly count their calories. Yuoichi is hung up on his food and never eats with his friends. He even ends up in an argument when he takes Tomoki to a hamburger restaurant and orders an ice coffee. When Tomoki asks him if he isn’t gonna have a hamburger he gets very upset and it ends with Tomoki not ordering any food but only an ice tea.
They deal with sports injuries, anxiety, heartbreak, jealousy; how everything affects training and how you perform. What’s important to you.
I don’t know, most people who has written a review about this anime should have kept watching it to the end. A lot happens after those first episodes. It isn’t just boys in speedos jumping off a tower, it is so much more. I wish it would have gotten more episodes so we could have seen more of the competitions but still get the character development. As it is now there is jumps between events and the competitions are cut very short. Some things aren’t even in the anime, they are just told of, like a big training camp in China. If the anime had gotten 26 episodes like a proper sports anime they could have shown that too.
Maybe I am one of a few who actually love to watch high diving (synchronized high diving is the best). Whenever there is a competition on TV I watch it. When I was little I could spend a whole weekend in front of the TV just to watch the high diving and the swimming competition (the relay is my favorite). Maybe this is the reason why I actually like this anime so much. Just as I am very fond of Free! I think it has gotten undeservingly bad (or less good) reviews.
