30 Day Challenge: Day 11 (Robots, Robots, They Are Everywhere)

I’m gonna be honest with you here; I have only seen one mecha (and a half episode of Cyborg 009 Call of Justice. That half episode had only to do with me going bananas over the subtitles being white soΒ  couldn’t see them properly. Now I have fixed the settings on my Apple TV so maybe I will watch it again. The protagonist is kind of cute.).

No, as I said, only one mecha and I know most of you know I am talking about Neon Genesis Evangelion. I wrote a somewhat emotional, messy post the other day about it so I’ll just link to it here. (spoiler alert if you read)

I never thought I would like the show that much. I doubt it was because of the robots per se though. That had more to do with all the dark psychological stuff. If there is anymore mecha of that caliber out there please point me in that direction. Because I don’t mind the robots if there is. Only robots fighting other robots isn’t really my forte. Unless there might be a cute protagonist (hell, I can take a cute antagonist as well but then I rather he be sexy and hot.) Anyway, I want to watch more mecha but I don’t know what’s good and not. (this is a hint that I want lots of comments about what’s good, okey.) I don’t even know what’s out there. So, to conclude this picture ridden post; I have one, and only one favorite mecha and that would be Neon Genesis Evangelion (in the lack of more options. Although, I might still have that anime as my favorite even if I watched ten more mecha. Who knows.)

  1. Evangelion truly was ahead of its time. Once I watched The End of Eva also, I had to take a moment to fully grasp what I watched. The lore is all incredible too, I wonder what all the religious symbolism actually means?!

    1. According to the creator nothing. He just took religion as an inspiration when he wrote the story. Somehow I believe him, it is so way out there I can very well see how he sees Adam and think “yeah, that’s cool him being the first human, how can I twist that into something cooler?”

  2. Haha: when you put a question in like that in this post: you can definitely expect a response from me: as it’s one of my favorite anime types. So here goes:
My favorite Mecha anime is Macross. As there are a huge amount of series you would do best to start with Macross Frontier. That one serves as a kind of reboot for the series and can be seen without having prior knowledge of the other shows (if you are interested, last year I wrote a post about Macross in general)
Patlabor is a classic, but also very cool series.
Gasaraki: it’s an older show, but features some pretty cool mecha fights and interesting robots
Gundam Wing: like Macross is contains an enormous amount of shows: but you would do best to just google it: I am not that familiar with that franchise.
If you need some more recommendations, I can provide them of course, but I don’t want to write a comment that is longer than this (awesome) post lol πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    1. Hehe, well I wanted suggestions so fire away my friend!!

I have heard of Gundam and I actually googled it a while back and got totally turned off because boy is there so much of it. I have no idea where to start.

Macross looks cool. Gonna see if I can find it and at least watch an episode or two.

      Gasaraki looks totally cool!

I don’t mind if your comment is longer than my post. πŸ˜‰ I asked for it. lol

Okay that is kind of true of course lol.
Well, here are a few more suggestions:
The big O: a pretty cool series that features a hero that I always compare a bit to Batman. The whole vibe of this series has a bit of a noir style to it, which is very cool.
The vision of Escaflowne: not only one of the greatest Mecha series ever, it is quite unique and the music for it alone makes it worth watching.
Knights of Sidonia: great series….well at least the first season is. The second season is a bit of a letdown, but overall the series is worth picking up.
Orguss02: okay last one (lolπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚), an older OVA series. Only 6 episodes, but features some of the coolest big robots that you will ever see.
Okay, hope all these suggestions help πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

      2. Oh, I like the look of The Big O. (I am gonna download it. Ssh, don’t tell anyone I am doing illegal stuff. It’s not like any legal streaming site have 90s anime. And finding it to buy seems almost impossible :P) I watched the PV on MAL and that song was really cool. I am such a 90s kid. πŸ˜‰

The vision of Escaflowne: I repeat all of the above. *points up*

Have I told you that I am a sucker for 90s anime?

Knights of Sidonia: Oh yes, that one is on Netflix. I actually started to watch that as in I saw the first few minutes. I was the wrong day for me to watch a new anime that wasn’t shallow and happy so I had to stop. (I was restless and had a lot of anxiety and had some sort of thought that maybe a space adventure could ease my mind. I didn’t work so well.) I want to give it another try though because it looks really interesting.

Orguss02: This looks absolutely amazing!! But, is there a TV series as well as 6 OVAs?

And yes! all the suggestions are just great! I love how you know about old and unknown (to me at least) anime that no one else have talked about. This is what I want, stuff I have never heard of. πŸ˜€

      3. Haha: I will keep quiet and won’t tell anyone lol πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
I love older anime myself a lot too. In fact last year I attended Animecon in my country and they showed older anime in one of the theatres: I was the only one there, which was kind of sad lolπŸ˜‚
As for Orguss: Orguss 02 is the follow up to the tv series Orguss. The first I haven’t seen, but the 6 part Ova series I have seen and is awesome. (And is selfcontained, so no prior knowledge is necessary 😊).
I think you will especially like the Big O. It is seriously cool: and the opening theme song is very catchy! πŸ˜€πŸ˜€
Hope you will enjoy them 😊😊

      4. I trust you. 😎

That is sad. People just don’t appreciate the oldies. Or maybe they are just to young. I grew up in the 80s and 90s so I’m used to the style. Only that short part I saw of Big O was a big flash of nostalgia.

      5. Same here: I also grew up in those days, and as such have a soft spot for the older shows. It really is sad that people don’t seem to appreciate the classic series anymore. Luckily I don’t feel old in any way πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

      6. Me neither. Why should we though? We are not that old. πŸ˜‰ I refuse to be old even if I am 60 so. There will come a day when the 20 year olds (of that time) will look back at todays anime and think the same as todays 20 year olds look at the 90s anime. People should just appreciate the beauty in all animation.

  3. Mecha anime! Same as you, I’ve also completely watched only one of this genre in my life *high five* and so that’ll be the one I’ll introduce – Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 😊

At its core, Tengen Toppa is more about human emotions with mecha fighting as its sideline. It was light-hearted when it needs to be, and it’s not short of (good) emotional drama as well. It’s nice seeing the development of the protagonist over certain major events in the anime. Overall, Tengen Toppa is the only mecha anime i stuck through and enjoyed until the end, whereas other mecha animes only lasted me an episode or two.

    1. Oh, I have heard of this one too but in my mind I imagined it completely different. The way you describe it it actually sounds like a mecha I could enjoy. This is exactly what I am after. Emotions with some robots on the side.
